A UK masters takes twelve months. That is its great advantage and the reason it is oversold in Ghana. One year of tuition and London-adjacent living costs, paid up front, is a very large sum, and it only makes sense if the funding is real or the career return is certain.
Why it works
- Twelve months, not twenty-four. One year of fees and one year of living costs instead of two. For a career-changer already earning, the opportunity cost is far lower.
- A familiar academic structure. Ghanaian degree classifications map cleanly onto UK entry requirements, so assessment is straightforward.
- Chevening. A genuinely fully funded route: tuition, stipend, flights. Ghanaian applicants win it every year. It rewards leadership and a clear plan for returning, not just grades.
- Commonwealth Scholarships specifically target candidates from Ghana and other Commonwealth countries who could not otherwise afford UK study.
Where it hurts
- Self-funding is expensive. Tuition, the Immigration Health Surcharge for the full visa period paid up front, and maintenance funds you must evidence.
- Post-study work rights are being reduced. The Graduate Route is under review with a shorter duration proposed. Verify current policy before you commit.
- Unconditional offers are a sales tool. An easy offer from a low-ranked institution is not a signal of your quality.
- A taught one-year masters rarely leads to funded PhD progression as directly as a US or Nordic research route.

What you need to have ready
Missing one of these rarely ends an application. Discovering it in the last fortnight usually does.
- Bachelor's degree, usually Second Class Upper or above for competitive programmes
- IELTS for UKVI or an accepted equivalent, at the level your course specifies
- Personal statement, shorter and more focused than a US statement of purpose
- Two academic references
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university once you accept
- Evidenced maintenance funds held for the required qualifying period
- ATAS clearance for certain science and technology subjects
Timeline
The cycle, working backwards from a September start
Jun – Aug
Shortlist built. IELTS taken. If Chevening is in play, the application is drafted now, because its deadline comes long before university deadlines.
Sep – Dec
University applications submitted. Most UK masters admit on a rolling basis, so early is materially better.
Jan – Mar
Offers arrive. Scholarship outcomes follow.
Apr – Jun
Offer accepted, deposit paid, maintenance funds placed and held for the qualifying period.
Jun – Aug
CAS issued. Student visa application, IHS paid, biometrics submitted.
Sep
Enrolment.

What goes wrong
Every one of these is something we have watched happen to a real applicant. Most are cheap to prevent and expensive to fix.
- Taking a loan against family property for an unfunded masters at an institution nobody in your sector recognises.
- Missing Chevening's deadline because you were focused on university applications.
- Maintenance funds moved between accounts during the qualifying period.
- Assuming the Graduate Route will be unchanged when you graduate.
- Choosing the university by ranking rather than by whether its graduates get hired in your field.
