π¨π³ Most generous open schemeChina
Measured purely by how much funding is available to an African applicant with a good but not extraordinary record, China is currently the most generous system in the world. The scholarships are real, they are substantial, and they are free to apply for, which is precisely why so many agents in Accra charge for them.
Why it works
- Full funding is genuinely common. Chinese Government Scholarship awards typically cover tuition, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly living stipend.
- Realistic odds. Ghana holds an allocation under bilateral arrangements, and the applicant pool is far smaller than for Western scholarships of comparable value.
- English-taught programmes exist across most fields at masters and doctoral level, particularly in engineering, medicine, business and international relations.
- Strong infrastructure in high-speed rail, renewable energy, telecommunications and civil engineering, fields with direct application to Ghana's development priorities.
Where it hurts
- Agents charge for what is free. Applying for a CSC scholarship costs nothing. Anyone charging you a large fee to "secure" one is selling you a form you can file yourself.
- Language outside the lecture hall. Even on an English-taught programme, daily life demands Mandarin, and most scholarships include or expect a preparatory language year.
- Recognition needs checking. Confirm how Ghanaian and international employers or licensing bodies in your field treat a Chinese qualification before committing.
- The process is documentation-heavy and unforgiving. Notarised documents, a physical examination form completed to specification, and a foreign supervisor's acceptance letter for doctoral applicants.

Requirements
What you need to have ready
Missing one of these rarely ends an application. Discovering it in the last fortnight usually does.
- Notarised degree certificates and transcripts, with certified English or Chinese translations
- Two recommendation letters from associate professors or above for masters and doctoral applications
- A study plan or research proposal. For doctoral applicants this is the decisive document
- Foreigner Physical Examination Form, completed exactly as specified
- HSK certificate for Chinese-taught programmes; English test evidence for English-taught ones
- An acceptance letter from a prospective supervisor: not required, but it transforms a doctoral application

Avoid these
What goes wrong
Every one of these is something we have watched happen to a real applicant. Most are cheap to prevent and expensive to fix.
- Paying an agent a large fee for a free application.
- Submitting the CSC portal application but not the university's separate one, or the reverse.
- A physical examination form filled out incorrectly, which invalidates the whole submission.
- A study plan that is two generic paragraphs. For doctoral applications this is the document that decides it.
- Not contacting a supervisor beforehand, which for research degrees is the single highest-leverage step.

Where this page stops
Everything above is true for everyone. None of it is about you.
You now know how the money and the calendar work here. What a web page cannot tell you is which departments would fund someone with your class, in your field, this cycle, or how to word the message that gets a reply rather than silence.
That is the part we do, and it is the part that decides the outcome.
What the first conversation gives you
- Whether this region is genuinely right for you, or whether another one fits your profile better
- Which programmes here are realistic against your actual results, banded by odds
- The specific funding instrument to aim at, and what it will demand of you
- A dated plan for this cycle, or an honest answer that you should target the next one
