π³π΄ PhDs are salaried jobsScandinavia & the Nordics
The Nordics carry the most out-of-date advice of any region. The single most valuable fact about them is also the least known in Ghana: in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, a PhD is not a scholarship. It is an employment contract, with a salary, pension contributions and holiday entitlement.
Why it works
- A Nordic PhD is a job. You are hired as a university employee on a real salary with benefits. One of the best-value routes anywhere, and almost nobody in Ghana targets it.
- Positions are advertised openly, like jobs. You apply to a specific funded project rather than gambling on admission and hoping funding follows.
- English is the working language of most Nordic graduate programmes and research groups. You do not need Norwegian or Finnish to do the degree.
- Serious research infrastructure in energy, marine science, public health, climate, materials and computing, all fields where Ghanaian graduates are genuinely competitive.
Where it hurts
- Norway is no longer free for you. Tuition fees for non-EEA students began with the autumn 2023 intake. Any agent still advertising free Norwegian tuition is working from stale information.
- Sweden, Finland and Denmark charge non-EU tuition at masters level. Scholarships offset it, sometimes fully, but they are competitive and must be applied for deliberately.
- The cost of living is high and the housing markets in Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki are tight. Student housing must be secured early.
- Masters funding is far scarcer than PhD funding. The region rewards research-track applicants much more than taught-masters applicants.

Figures, thresholds and eligibility rules change between intakes. Treat this as orientation, not as the final word. We verify current requirements against the official source for your specific case.
Requirements
What you need to have ready
Missing one of these rarely ends an application. Discovering it in the last fortnight usually does.
- A completed bachelor's for masters entry; a completed masters for most PhD positions
- A genuine research match. For PhD posts you apply to a named project with a named supervisor
- IELTS or TOEFL at the level the institution requires
- A CV in European academic format, which is longer and more detailed than a UK one
- Evidence of funds for the residence permit application
- Early housing applications. In several cities this is the binding constraint, not admission
Timeline
Two different clocks
Masters Β· Oct β Jan
Application windows for August intake typically open in autumn and close in January. Scholarship applications are usually part of the same submission.
Masters Β· Feb β Apr
Admission and scholarship decisions.
Masters Β· Apr β Jul
Residence permit application, funds evidenced, housing secured.
PhD Β· Year-round
Positions are advertised continuously as projects receive funding. There is no single deadline. You monitor and apply as they appear.
PhD Β· Application
CV, cover letter addressing the specific project, transcripts, references. Often an interview panel.
PhD Β· Contract
You receive an employment contract, not an admission letter. Salary, pension and holiday are stated in it.
Avoid these
What goes wrong
Every one of these is something we have watched happen to a real applicant. Most are cheap to prevent and expensive to fix.
- Believing Norway is still tuition-free. It is not, and has not been since 2023.
- Applying for taught masters places when your profile would be competitive for a salaried PhD post.
- Ignoring Finland, which quietly runs some of the most generous scholarship schemes in Europe.
- Underestimating living costs and arriving without secured housing.
- Sending a generic application to an advertised PhD project. These are hiring decisions, and the cover letter must address the project.

Where this page stops
Everything above is true for everyone. None of it is about you.
You now know how the money and the calendar work here. What a web page cannot tell you is which departments would fund someone with your class, in your field, this cycle, or how to word the message that gets a reply rather than silence.
That is the part we do, and it is the part that decides the outcome.
What the first conversation gives you
- Whether this region is genuinely right for you, or whether another one fits your profile better
- Which programmes here are realistic against your actual results, banded by odds
- The specific funding instrument to aim at, and what it will demand of you
- A dated plan for this cycle, or an honest answer that you should target the next one
Admission + partial scholarship
